Bio & CV

Shahrooz Mohammad (B. 1997, Mie, Japan)

Shahrooz Mohammad is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tehran, with a primary focus on photography. He was born in 1997 in Mie, Japan, grew up in a family with Iranian and Bolivian roots and migrated to Iran at the age of nine. Living between different cultures and facing social and linguistic shifts shaped his early perspective on the world around observation, doubt, and translation. In 2023, he received his B.A. in Architecture from Azad University of Tehran while simultaneously expanding his practice in photography and visual arts.

In his works, boundaries, distances, and thresholds play a central role. He explores how such boundaries, despite their apparent rigidity, can be fluid, relative, and open to transformation. For him, the act of seeing and recording is not a mechanical gesture but a process imbued with patience, doubt, and choice. His use of small, portable cameras reflects his approach to observation: tools that allow him to experience borders and situations directly and intimately, while also creating an archival perspective that preserves moments for later re-reading.

His multicultural background and experience of migration further reinforce this perspective, situating his works in constant oscillation between parallel realities—realities that are neither entirely “this” nor fully “that.” As a result, his practice questions the certainty of reality while opening space for the experience of spectra and in-between states.

He received the Photography Award at the 2nd Sateen Annual of Visual Arts in 2021, Tehran, and his works have been presented in group exhibitions in Iran, Scotland, and the United Arab Emirates.
